The orchard has been pruned and the garden has been rototilled all in anticipation of Spring. The big news is the new additions in the chicken coop. I found 2 year old Ameraucana breed chickens, 8 hens and 2 roosters, which brings our flock up to a grand total of 27 birds.
The Ameraucana was developed in the United States in the 1970s from Araucana chickens brought from Chile. It was bred to retain the unusual blue-egg gene of the Araucana. The blue or green eggs that these chickens lay have proven popular with our customers. They also bring new meaning to Dr. Seuss book ``Green Eggs and Ham``, making green eggs a hit with children of all ages.
There continues to be a demand for heritage breeds and supply seems to be limited. We plan to breed these girls for the first part of the spring selling fertilized eggs and hatching chicks. With this goal in mind, a new nesting box was built from scrap wood which has been well received by the hens.

In future blogs, I will up date you on how this endeavor is going. The Babydoll sheep are all doing well and have really settled in. We will be breeding them in the Fall.
